Bir başkasının söylediğini bildirmek istediğimizde, ‘doğrudan iletim’ yaparız.
Söyleneni doğrudan ilettiğimizde, kişinin söylediğini, aynı sözlerle tırnak içinde kullanırız.
Doğrudan iletim: Annie said, ‘I’m hungry.’
Dolaylı iletimde, kişinin kullandığı bazı kelimeleri değiştiririz, ve tırnak kullanmayız.
Dolaylı iletim: Annie said (that) she was hungry.
               yada: Annie says (that) she’s hungry.
Bir geçmiş zaman iletme eylemi kullandığımızda (ör. Annie said), iletinin zamanıda normal olarak değişecektir (ör. I’m geçmiş zamana dönüşecektir: she was).
Fakat şimdiki zaman bir iletme eylemi kullandığımızda (ör. Annie says), zamanda bir değişim olmayacaktır (ör. I’m şimdiki zaman olarak kalır: she’s).

Tell sonrası kimin dediğini söylemek için bir kişi zamiri yada ismi (ör. Sarah, me, us) kullanırız.
Say ile birlikte ise, kişi zamir yada ismi normalde kullanılmaz. Karşılaştırınız:

1 Zaman
a – Eğer aktarım fiillerini geçmiş bir zamanda kullanırsak (he said, you told me), aktarılan konuşmanın zamanı normal olarak geçmişe dönüşür.
• Şimdiki zamanda olan fiiller geçmiş zamana dönüşür.

 "I'm going home."  He said he was going home.
 "I want to stop."  You told me you wanted to stop.
 "I don't like tea."  She said she didn't like tea.
 "Sally has finished."  You said that Sally had finished.

• Zaten geçmiş zaman olan fiiller uzak geçmiş zamana dönüşürler. Veya bir değişim göstermeyebilirler.


"I spoke to them."  I said I had spoke to them. / I said I
  spoke to them.
"We arrived late."  They said they had arrived late / They
  said they arrived late.


• Uzak geçmiş zaman olan fiillerse, değişmezler.
"I had seen the film before."  I told you I had seen the film before.

Kip-fiiller

"I can swim."  He said he could swim.
"I will be at home."  She said that she would be at home.
"We may go by train."  They told me they might go by train.

Geçmiş zaman olan kip-fiiller could, would, should ve might  aktarımda değişmezler.


"You could be right."  I said you could be right.
"You should see the film."  They told me I should see the film.

Must ya değişmez yada had to olarak değişir.


"I must go."  He said he must go. / he had to go.

b – Geçmiş bir aktarım fiili kullandığımızda, her zaman aktarılan konuşmanın zamanını değiştirmeyiz.

around 9 million"  around 9 million.
"I live in Samsun"  She told me that she lives in Samsun.

Fakat bir şey hala doğru olsa bile, aktarım cümlesinin zamanını çoğunlukla değiştiririz.


He said the population of London was around 9 million.

2 Zamirler, sıfatlar, zarflar, vs.
a – Zamirler (ör I, me) ve iyelik sıfatları (ör my, your) aktarım cümlelerinde sıklıkla değişir. Karşılaştırınız:


Doğrudan konuşma: Sue said, “I’m on holiday with my friend.”
Aktarım konuşması: Sue said she was on holiday with her friend.

Sue’dan söz ederken ondan o diye bahsederiz, ben değil. Onun arkadaşından söz edeceğimiz de ise benim arkadaşım diyemeyiz
B – İnsanlar konuşurken bulundukları yeri ve ne zaman konuştuklarını söylemek için here, now, today gibi kelimeler kullanırlar. Eğer bu kelimeleri farklı bir zaman ve yerde bildiriyorsak, çoğunlukla değiştiririz. Örneğin:
